The Basilica of Baños de Agua Santa is located in the main square of the city, built at the end of 1944, is a symbol of faith and devotion to dwell on the national city and tourists and foreigners who visit this church for peace spiritual, some for the virgin or simply out of devotion.
The Basilica is surrounded by beautiful mountains, waterfalls and especially sheltered under the Tungurahua volcano, its construction took about 40 years, starting construction in 1904 by Fray Thomas Halflants pastor of Baños de Agua Santa and its final completion was in 1944 Fray Sebastian Acosta.
Inside the Basilica are murals that refer to the miracles attributed to the Virgin of Agua Santa. Historical data indicate that the construction of the Basilica is that a sacristan saw the image of the Virgin Mary left the shack that served as a church at the time, it was going together two angels. The residents of the city gathered together with the pastor asked the virgin express their will.
The following night the priest was able to receive the apparition of the Virgin which stated that it was his will that a temple be built at the foot of La Chorrera, ensuring that would cure the sick bathe in its waters and by faith they would look freed from their illnesses.
This church has served as a refuge when the Tungurahua volcano has erupted on multiple occasions, suddenly people who have remained inside have come out unscathed.
